In response to the humanitarian crisis at America’s ports of entry, Devereux provides short-term shelter care services for unaccompanied children who have come to the United States without a parent or legal guardian. Devereux provides extremely high-quality, trauma-informed residential and educational services for unaccompanied children, with intense supports for their social and emotional health. We also ensure they receive excellent and immediate physical healthcare including pediatric, dental and nutritional supports for every child.

Devereux’s ultimate goal is to ensure every unaccompanied child who receives our services is successfully and quickly discharged into the loving care of their family sponsor and, during the short time they are with us, have received best-in-class medical, therapeutic, recreational and educational services designed specifically to address the traumas they have sustained during, and often before, their migration journey. This is a very high benchmark to set, but Devereux has partnered with leading immigration rights advocates and legal defense nonprofits to ensure children in our care have access to the finest legal supports offered by our country.

The Bilingual Program Director is responsible for the management of the programmatic, administrative, financial, and operational systems for refugee children; provision of regular and timely reports will be provided to the Short-term Shelter program; a respectful and supportive workplace environment; and elevating any issues or concerns to the shelter program. The Program Director will develop a positive work environment designed to attract and retain a progressive, caring and diverse workforce. The candidate will meet the current and anticipated needs of key internal and external customers, including individuals, sponsors, and regulatory agencies.

The IDEAL candidate will…

  • Have a master’s degree in social work or an equivalent degree in education, psychology, sociology, or other relevant behavioral science degree. In lieu of a master’s degree he/she may have a bachelor’s degree plus 5 years’ experience in child welfare administration, child protective services and 2 years of experience in program management or as a director of a licensed child care program.

  • Have supervisory experience

  • Have knowledge of regulatory requirements and an ability to adhere to established regulations

  • Have excellent customer service skills, as well as written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and problem-solving skills

  • Have the ability to multi-task and manage crises

  • Be bilingual in English/Spanish

  • Have the ability to adapt to rapidly changing demands of the position, customer needs, and the organization

  • Have proficient computer skills and mastery of Microsoft applications

  • Possess and maintain valid driver's license, and be at least 21 years of age
